instagram-videoIn a blog post published on their company website today Instagram announced that they have reached 150 million active users.

Even more noteworthy though is 50 million users have joined in the last six months, with 60% of users coming from outside the US. With the introduction of Instagram Video in June, and the ability to import videos last month, more and more brands and users are flocking to the site to consume and share photos and videos.

Ads are also coming to Instagram, as reported by the Wall Street Journal’s Evelyn Rusli the company will begin monetizing its service in the next year.

As noted by Instagram analytics company Nitrogram, Instagram started communicating monthly active users rather than its total number of created accounts in January. Since then the company has grown by more than 60 million users.

By comparison Vine, Twitter’s 6 second video sharing app, has only 40 million registered users, with no publicly available count of their active users. Flickr, Yahoo’s photo sharing app (with its recent mobile overhaul) has 87 million users.
