Hi David - Yes, I've done lots of the other kinds of contests as well. Those in my mind are really a whole different ball of wax. They carry an entirely unique set of rewards and considerations with them as well. Especially if you're an international company, or even if you're not, the inter-state trade regulations come in to play if you're operating across state borders.
And you're right - there can be a rather short term value to the contests based around sharing. But they can increase brand awareness in small bursts and as they're fairly easy to implement through repetition you can elongate this awareness.
Depending on your resources and other considerations contests involving UGC can be a great way engage your audience especially if there's a voting component thereby enticing them to share the content even further.

Would be interested to hear your experience with contests beyond "tweet this to win" or "share this to win".

Those contests always seemed like very short term value to me.

Have you experimented with different kinds of prizes? Physical gifts? Cash? Digital gifts?

Have you experimented with more intense entry methods? ie. perform an action on our site. Obviously there would be less entries but they'll probably be much higher in quality.

David, Scribnia

Great question!! Assuming I've pulled down all entries into a spreadsheet (usually using RowFeeder) I will use the RAND function in Excel to generate a random number. Usually I need to generate a number from something other than the interval [0,1) so using the altered formula =RAND() * (b−a) + a will give me random numbers from the interval [a,b) being > or = to a, and < than b.

TwitRand is limited to 1500 responses. What would you use to make a choice that has a deeper pool of responses?
